Federally Funded Activities

The Indiana Health Information Exchange is considered to be a national health information exchange "best practice". Because of this recognition, the Indiana Health Information Exchange and the Regenstrief Institute are involved in several past and current federally funded activities, which include:

• The Indiana University School of Medicine and Regenstrief Institute received a $2.5 million contract to begin a trial implementation of a Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN). The funding will allow researchers from the Regenstrief Institute Inc., with participation from the Indiana Health Information Exchange, to continue their groundbreaking work in health information exchange. The Indianapolis group is one of only nine selected by HHS to work on NHIN. (2007)
• An engagement by the eHealth Initiative to share best-practices information on health information exchange sustainability. eHI released a toolkit to assist communities in developing regional health information exchanges. (2007)
• An Ambulatory Care Quality Alliance pilot project that combines information to measure and report on physician practices in a meaningful way for consumers and purchasers of health care. The project is supported with funding from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. (2006)
• Participation in the Connecting for Health Consortium, which is working to develop a prototype for the Nationwide Health Information Network architecture. This effort is managed by the Markle Foundation and funded by Markle and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. (2005)
• A grant by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to develop and expand health information technology throughout the state. (2004)
