Josh Nelson, MD, JD
Dr. Nelson joined the Indiana Health Information Exchange (IHIE) as the Chief Medical Officer in November, 2011. He provides medical, clinical and healthcare delivery systems expertise and strategy for IHIE products and services, and serves as the medical liaison to IHIE clients, stakeholders and communities.
Most recently, Dr. Nelson was a Physician Executive Fellow at WellPoint in Indianapolis and obtained project experience in data and health outcomes analysis; technology and information system innovation; quality, compliance; case, disease and utilization management; and provider engagement issues including accountable care organizations, medical homes, innovative payment structures.
Previously, he was a clinical research investigator and physician in an outpatient clinic for several years, involved in more than 50 Phase II through IV clinical trials with a range of molecular and biologic products for central nervous system diagnoses. He began his medical career as a hospitalist at Kaiser Permanente in California working with a team of allied health providers for mental health and medical issues in a managed care environment. Dr. Nelson is a board certified Psychiatrist. He completed his residency in Psychiatry at the University of Michigan, and an internship in Internal Medicine within the Providence system in Oregon. He attended medical school at UC Davis.
Before his medical career, Dr. Nelson was an attorney at a large law firm in Los Angeles, negotiating and documenting high value business transactions. He attended law school at UC Berkeley and received his undergraduate degree from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
